Roshan- music director par excellence

After quite some time, I am back to doing what I love doing the most- i.e. talking about a legendary music director of the past.

This time,I will like to discuss Music director Roshan,a name that is known today as being the grandfather of Hrithik Roshan, but who was in reality a bigger name,and made a bigger contribution to Bollywood than any of his descendants, Hrithik Roshan included. In fact, Roshan was his first name, not his surname. He was Roshan Lal Nagrath,but his first name became such a brand name that his sons and grandson( Rajesh and Rakesh, and Rakesh's son Hrithik) adopted this as their surnames.


Like most music directors of that era, he was very well trained in classical music. He joined Morris College of Music in Lucknow,studied there for 5 years and took degree of Master of Music.Not content with that, he went to ustad Allauddin Khan Dagar of Maihar, where Ustadji would typically train him for six hours daily only on one Raag.

Roshan made his debut as a music director in 1949 in "Neki aur Badi" as a raw and inexperienced music director. Then he got his next movie "Baawre nain" in 1950, and that had some wonderful songs.

Roshan, by his own admission, was not prepared as a music director when he made his debut.And as a result, he did not have much success in early parts of his career. But as he gained experience, and honed his musical skills as a music director, he started giving hits after hits in copious numbers, beginning from around 1960.Many of his compositions went on to become immortal songs.

"Barsaat ki raat" in 1960 was a movie that was enough to immortalise Roshan in the history of Bollywood music. Every song of this movie continues to be a rage even today.

Though it is Madan Mohan who earned the accolades as the King of ghazals,Roshan was no less in this field, as his songs show."Aarti",the first movie of Rajshree Productions in 1962 was a big musical hit. Roshan was the music director, and he came up with a gem like this:

This song, despite being a "classy" song, i.e. a ghazal, managed 3rd position in Binaca geetmala 1962, one place ahead of Madan Mohan's equally classy ghazal
("Aapki nazron ne samjha" from "Anpadh").

The songs from Anokhi Raat had taken the nation by storm,but just when it looked like Roshan was burning the brightest,and looked like he was at the peak of his prowess,he died all of a sudden, and the Bollywood world suffered first of its major losses in 1960s. It was one of the deaths that ultimately brought the end to the golden era of Bollywood music in late 1960s- early 1970s.

Binaca Geetmala 1970 final

1970 was the last year in which sanity continued to be maintained, and the Binaca geetmala 1970 final list had equitable distribution of songs among many singers and music directors in the final 32.

It was just a matter of time before all hell would break loose and Binaca geetmala would become an all Kishore Kumar show during 1971.

Not just among singers and music directors, change of guard was taking place among actors too. Rajesh Khanna had become the new heart throb of the public, and old heart throbs like Dilip Kumar and Rajendra Kumar were on their way out.Similarly Hema Malini was taking over from Vyjyantimala and co.

The only oldtimer music directors who held their own and would continue to do so in the coming years were S D Burman and Shankar Jaikishan. 1970 was a year when other senior music directors found themselves getting marginalised.

In fact, with the death of Jaikishan in late 1970, even the Shankar Jaikishan musical duo would not be the same in the coming years.Naushad managed one song, but there was no place for O P Nayyar,Madan Mohan etc in Binaca geetmala 1970. It is a bit surprising really, considering that Madan Mohan came up with a national award winning performance in Dastak. But then, Binaca geetmala songs were for the masses,and not for classes, and Dastak songs did not find favour with the masses.

For the fourth year in a row, a Laxmikant Pyarelal composition emerged as the top song of the year. Overall, it was another year that saw lots of nice songs, many of them going on to become evergreen. After all, we were in the decade of 1960s that was to be regarded as the golden decade of Bollywood music.

Binaca Geetmala 1969 final

Binaca geetmala 1969 finals had its songs evenly distributed among music directors and singers.Top 10 songs were shared by 7 different music directors and were sung by four singers. Ironically,the voice that would rule the roost in future,and the music director(s) who promoted that voice did not figure in top 10. But there was no doubt that this song (Mere sapno ki rani) by Kishore Kumar, which occupied only 14th spot, was so popular that it could have been the number 1 next year too, had it not retired after playing for its quota of times ( and it had not figured for enough number of weeks in 1969 to do justice to its popularity in Binaca geetmala standings).

Other songs this year were outstanding songs, and most of them are evergreen songs even now.But that did not stop most of the oldtimer music directors composing these songs from finding themselves largely jobless after this year.The hurricane that had come late in the year in the form of Kishore Kumar would sweep all before it and the Bollywood music scene would be turned topsy turvy in future, beginning from 1970.

Binaca geetmala 1967 final

Songs of Milan, under the music direction of Laxmikant Pyarelal, took the nation by storm in the year 1967, and Binaca geetmala 1967 was no exception. Another newcomer, R D Burman, whose career as a music director was on a hold after 1961,suddenly found his career taking off in a big way- thanks to his music in "Teesri Manzil". This launching pad would stand R D Burman in good stead, and would enable him to to dominate the Bollywood music in the next decade.

Beggars on the Bombay local train got a song tailormade for their purpose in this Binaca geetmala. It went- "gareebon ki suno, wo tumhari sunega, tum ek paisa doge, wo das lakh dega." There was a superb Ghazal too ( from Roshan) in this Binaca geetmala countdown-"Hum intezar karenge tumhara qayamat tak". Truly a ghazal worth waiting for ! Sonik , who was Madan Mohan's assistant, composed music with his nephew Omi (Sonik Omi), and came up with a musical blockbuster called "Dil ne phir yaad kiya". But the competition was such that only one of its songs( out of nearly a dozen wonderful songs) made it to the finals of Binaca geetmala 1967. This song was played, rather appropriately, one rung below Madan Mohan's song- "Meri awaz suno".

And the list may not reflect it, but the songs of "Upkaar" were a big rage among all and sundry, including ice cream sellers who would play "mere desh ki dharti sona ugle" on a record player installed on their cart. And did I tell you that this Binaca geetmala had a lullaby too- "Dheere dheere machal ae dile bekaraar" from Anupama, though the song "kuch dil ne kaha" from the same movie failed to make it to the finals? Too classy for the masses, I think.

Binaca geetmala 1965 may have been slowly but steadily witnessing a change of guard among Bollywood music directors, as most of the slots including the top slots this time were occupied by newcomers like Kalyanji Anandji, Laxmikant Pyarelal,R D Burman and Ravi.

1964, like most other years of that decade saw a rich crop of great songs figuring in Binaca geetmala finals. Most of these songs went on to become evergreen songs.

Binaca Geetmala 1963 final

1963 Binaca geetmala final saw Roshan and Ravi competing for the top positions alongwith Shankar-Jaikishan, and a new music director duo burst into the scene with great fanfare. It was the music director duo of Laxmikant Pyarelal, who embellished an otherwise forgettable C grade movie called Parasmani with some unforgettable music, and as many as three of their compositions from this movie figured in the top 16 of the Binaca geetmala finals. Binaca Geetmala 1962 final

This was the year of the ghazals for Bollywood movies as well as Binaca Geetmala. Quality of songs was extremely high.So much so that songs like "Laakhon taare aasmaan me" and "teri yaad dil se" from "Hariyali aur Raasta" failed to make it to top 32 of this year's Binaca geetmala. Unbelievable, really!

This was the year when Madan Mohan's class was finally recognised by masses as well, when his "Anpadh" ghazals finished 4th and 12th.Naushad called these two ghazals equal to all his compositions put together.Roshan's compositions were equally outstanding,and he had three wonderful songs from "Aashiq" figuring in this Binaca geetmala countdown.

And there were a couple of immortal prayers in this year's Binaca geetmala, one of them being " Jyot kalash chalke" from "Bhabhi ki choodiyan", and the other was "Tumhi ho mata, pita tumhi ho" from "Main chup rahoongi" which became popular as school prayers in many schools ( including in my school).
